Les Liaisons & Dangereuses and Advanced Upper Class Scamming

“Dangerous Liaisons” (1988) is a highly acclaimed historical drama directed by Stephen Frears, based on the illustrious 1782 French novel “Les Liaisons dangereuses” by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. The film is honoured for its intricate plot, rich characterization, and for cleverly exploring themes of manipulation, deceit, and moral corruption in the decadent world of the French aristocracy on the eve of the French Revolution.

The story is built around two manipulative, wealthy French aristocrats, the Marquise de Merteuil (Glenn Close) and the Vicomte de Valmont (beautifully played by John Malkovich), who use sex as a weapon to humiliate and degrade others for their own amusement. They engage in a cruel game of seduction and betrayal, with their innocent victims being the virtuous Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer) and the young Cécile de Volanges (Uma Thurman).

“Dangerous Liaisons” is, at its core, a tale of power, seduction, and deceit. Frears’ skillful direction captures the bitter gamesmanship and cunning strategies that Merteuil and Valmont employ in their quest for dominance. However, beneath their amoral exterior, these characters are shown to be profoundly unhappy, revealing the hollowness of a life lived without empathy or genuine emotional connection.

Another key theme is the exploration of gender and power dynamics. Merteuil is a fascinating character who, despite the rigid societal constraints on women during her time, uses her intelligence and sexual power to manipulate every man around her. She is motivated solely by revenge against the men who have wronged her, showing the deep-seated misogyny and double standards of their society.

Furthermore, the film’s opulent costumes and sets, combined with Frears’ sumptuous visual style, inspire a world of luxury and excess that is morally bankrupt at its core. This contributes to the film’s critique of aristocratic decadence.
